Note to CSFF tourers: I will have a review up for the webzine Mindflights tomorrow. Nancy Cobb and Connie Grigsby seek to teach wives how men communicate in their relatively short book, How to get Your Husband to Listen to You. The book has plenty of advice to make it a worthwhile read, some novel ideas, understand the way God wired him and accept him as he is, and even more novel: don’t nag. Seriously, if you’ve read a lot of self help books on this subject, a good portion of this will seem familiar, but the personal anecdotes, short chapter lengths, and bottom-line presentationRead More →

Trading Places by Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott promises to offer “the best move you’ll ever make in your marriage” and it largely delivers, and in less than 200 pages. The topic? A skill highly valued in many professions. Empathy. A novel idea, isn’t it? Stepping back for a moment from your own agenda to consider your spouses’ feelings and view point and then acting on that information. Taking time to pay attention to and care about the feelings of someone you promised to “until death do we part” to and actually verifying if your emotion-based assumptions are accurate. Or, conversely, to open your heartRead More →

I had the opportunity to read Winning Nice by Dawna Stone and honestly I come away with mixed feelings. This fairly slim volume is jam packed with useful advice for those who want to succeed in the business world, as the subtitle promises, without waging war. It’s one of those books that, if taken to heart and put into practice, could easily earn it’s price tag in the changes effected to one’s life. Stone clearly knows her subject matter and shows wisdom throughout. She practices what she preaches and models her teachings through out the book. No where is this more evident than in herRead More →

By Adam Graham Can you turn around a lifetime of unhealthy habits while having one of America’s highest stress jobs? Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee proves that you can. Michael Landon, in an infamous episode of Highway to Heaven, confronts an overweight teenager about her decision to down a dozen donuts by herself, suggesting that if she doesn’t like her weight, she do something about it. Thanks, Mike. I’m sure she never tried that. Most advice for the Big and the Handsome/Big and the Beautiful falls under the category of “Well intended, but unhelpful or even hurtful.” Particularly when it comes to people who haveRead More →

As my little note says, my husband and I spent a couple months going round and round with various hosts trying to get our domain functional, hence the major reason for the huge gap in our history. I also got flooded/burned out on my book reviewing and way behind right at the same time. But we’re starting to get back on track. I probably shouldn’t have agreed to review Around the World in 80 Dates by Christa Ann Banister. The main character, Sydney Alexander is the type of got-it-all-together starbucks-craving shoe-buying career woman that infertile-work-at-home-without-pay-wives like me feel uncomfortable (read: inferior) around. From what IRead More →
